We asked our merchants:

How did you meet the love of your life?

Posted

It’s almost Valentine’s Day.  Are you feeling romantic yet?

If not, you’re not alone.

Last week, we wandered around Malverne and West Hempstead, looking for people who would answer the question — "How did you meet your true love?" — and boy, did we get a wake up call.

While we received some cute responses, and others were too shy to tell us, we also got a hard reminder that all is fair in love and war.
Some of the answers we received during our labor of love were as follows (names have been withheld to protect anonymity):

  • You don’t want to ask me that question!”
  • “I’m dating someone now, but he’s not my true love, and I don’t want him to know that.”
  • “I married my wife because she needed citizenship papers.”
  • “I’m divorced, I have no true love.”
  • “I haven’t met her yet.”

Fear not, hopeless romantics. We managed to gather some heart-warming stories from some area merchants, most of whom are ready with Valentine’s Day gift suggestions for your sweeties — whether they’re a significant other, child, pet, friend — whoever is your life’s true love.
The Herald wishes you and yours a very happy Valentine’s Day.

Jo Ann Cuchel, owner of Bald Eagle American in Malverne: “How I met the love of my life? Facebook, believe it or not. But I knew him in high school, and we reconnected after many, many years. We’ve been together for seven years now.”

Al Bury, owner of Malverne Florist: “You should ask Bruce Ferber next door that question.”

Bruce Ferber, All State Insurance Company: I met my wife at Stony Brook University in Constitutional Law class during our last semester. I got a higher grade than her. She had higher grades all year, and I got a higher grade on the final. She was a goody two shoes, and I was a bad guy. I talked in class, and she took notes.”

Dimitrius Tzakas, owner, Venus Restaurant: “My wife doesn’t want to talk about it.”

Josephine Ioannou, hairstylist, Delphi Barber Shop: My mother used to go bowling, and he was on her team. She used to say to him all the time, ‘I have a daughter for you. I have a daughter for you.’  I wound up going on a blind date with him, except I didn’t know it was a blind date. The date was with my sister, him and his friend, but I thought we were just going out.  Afterwards, we went to a bar, and he couldn’t get in, because he was 20 and I was 21.
