Looking for a summer job? Find one in Malverne

News of Malverne’s Summer Rec sign-up had evidently reached all the right ears.

Nearly 400 children signed up for its summer activities this year, which will be held for six weeks, from July 7 through August 13, on Monday through Thursday mornings.

The only issue now is that the village need more counselors to staff the program.

“We are still looking for counselors and junior counselors,” said village trustee Keith Corbett at last week’s village board meeting. “We are accepting online applications or you can pick them up at village hall.

In the past the village always required counselors to work the program’s full six weeks without any vacation time. But since there aren’t enough counselors to staff the program yet, the village seems to be willing to bend the rules a bit. “Even if you have a conflict with one or two weeks, please put your application in,” said trustee Patricia Callahan.

Junior counselors - those entering 8th and 9th grade, are hired on a volunteer basis. Counselors, those entering 10th grade and up, will be paid minimum wage: $8.75 per hour.

Malverne’s summer rec program offers children, from kindergarten through 7th grade, weekly bowling, movies, crafts, sports activities and special field trips. Malverne Summer Rec is based at the Maurice W. Downing School.

The program is bargain for Malverne residents, who pay $65 for the first child and $30 for each additional child.

The village is asking all Malverne residents who are interested in working for the village to contact them immediately and fill out their online registration form at www.malvernevillage.org. Applicants residing outside the village are also invited to submit an application, but the village will give preference to Malverne residents.
