This season features that summer favorite, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” playfully celebrating the humorous aspects of love. The approaching wedding festivities of Theseus, Duke of Athens, and his bride-to-be, Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons, are delightfully crisscrossed with the on-again, off-again romances of two young pairs of Athenian lovers; a fateful rivalry between the King and Queen of the Fairies; and the theatrical aspirations of a bumbling troupe of Athenian laborers. It all ends in wedding-night revelry complete with a play-within-a-play presented by the laborers, to the ecstatic amusement of all.
Theatergoers are encouraged to picnic on the majestic lawns overlooking the Long Island Sound before the show. Performances are Wednesday and Friday, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, at 7 p.m., through Aug. 24 (except Aug. 1).
For the younger set, Arena Players invites everyone to journey down that Yellow Brick Road in is audience-participation version of “The Wizard of Oz” at its Carriage House Theatre in Centerport. Dorothy’s familiar journey from Kansas to Oz is highlighted by her meetings with all the beloved characters: the Munchkins, Glinda the Good Witch, the Wicked Witch, the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and the Cowardly Lion. It can be seen weekends, also through Aug. 24.
Indoors, the BroadHollow Theatre Company goes to the dogs at its Elmont location, with “Disney’s “101 Dalmations.” The kids will have a tail wagging good time watching what happens to the monstrous Cruella De Vil as she attempts steal those dalmation puppies for her new fur coat. See it on Aug. 6, at 10:30 p.m. “Cats” the popular Andrew Lloyd Webber musical version based on the poems of T.S. Eliot, starts Aug. 2.
