Tax Certiorari Law

Q: My school tax bill that I just received (October 1, 2014) is higher than ever even though I was granted an assessment reduction last year. Why?

A: The school budget is capped at about 2%. But, if there are many assessment reductions granted to tax payers in the school district, the tax rate could increase 8, 10, or 12% so that the school district gets all the money that is needed for the budget. If you didn’t complain about the assessment last year, it is too late to complain about the tax bill now. For the future, and if you hadn't already done so, you should contact a Tax Certiorari attorney in advance of grievance deadlines.
