They're truly the Pride of Malverne

On Sunday September 28, Malverne high school played host to its third annual “Pursuit of Pride” band competition, featuring the talents of bands from Eastport South Manor, Midland Park, NJ, Floral Park, Mineola, Copiague and Brentwood. Since Malverne was host, its marching band, the Pride of Malverne, did not compete, but did give the crowd a performance — and what a performance it was.

The band’s theme this year was “La Vida Latina” and featured music selections from Malaguena and Mask of Zorro. The Pride of Malverne is made up of over 40 students, who gave an awe-inspiring presentation, from the grace and beauty of the color guard to the infectious beat of its drumline and horns.

Winning schools of this year’s competition included:

Small school 3 class: Floral Park – 1st place

Small schools 2 class: Mineola - 1st place

Large school 2 class: Copiague – 1st place

National class: Brentwood

The Pride of Malverne’s Band Director is Glen Johnson; its Assistant Director is Alyssa Rizzuto; its Chairperson of Music and Fine Arts is Michael Messina.

“Our competition season starts early September and goes through October,” said Messina. “We perform in eight competitions that culminate in the state championships at Syracuse Carrier Dome from October 25-26.

The Pride of Malverne boasts past state championships from 2006, 2010 and 2011.

“Eventually, we want the national class,” said Messina. “We’d love to be there”.

The Herald doubts it will take too much longer.
