Weeks after Sandy, many still need help

Posted

The hurricane-force winds and the mountainous storm surge are now just bad memories, but in many areas of the Heralds’ coverage area — Long Beach, Oceanside, Island Park, East Rockaway, parts of Baldwin and the Five Towns, parts of Bellmore and Merrick — Hurricane Sandy’s consequences will live on for weeks, months or years. Its deep physical, psychological and financial effects will be felt by many residents and business owners for a long time.

Federal, state, county, town, village and school district budgets will be — are already — strained beyond the deficit-laden spending plans they were before the storm struck so violently. The City of Long Beach is slowly recovering, but it has been in ruins, its infrastructure torn apart. Only its spirit stayed strong, thanks to the good people who live and work there.

All around, our neighbors are still hurting, and still need help.

The Herald has compiled this list of organizations and places where you can donate cash, food, clothes — or volunteer and lend a hand.
