Posted

The West Hempstead Union Free School District Superintendent Daniel Rehman, along with other district officials, welcomed members of the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council for the first meeting of the year on Oct. 4.
West Hempstead Board President Karen Brohm and Vice President Andrea Shinsato stopped by to speak with Rehman and Assistant Superintendent Dina Reilly and to introduce themselves to the nine students that represented each school in the district.
The purpose of the council meetings is to have students provide feedback and present viable solutions on district initiatives and programs. The main objective of the first meeting was to discuss learning and the role of the student. Discussion points included class participation, family events, school pride and conversations with principals and assistant principals.
“This is probably one of the most empowering opportunities I have ever witnessed,” said George Washington third-grade teacher Barbara Silkes.
The group closed the meeting with each student having a responsibility of following up on certain action points that can be discussed in the future.
