Nassau County Legislator Siela Bynoe presented $1,500 college scholarships to three STEM scholars at the Tanglewood Preserve in Lakeview on Aug. 12. The presentation concluded a weekend where hundreds of students received back-to-school supplies at “Road to Success” events sponsored by Bynoe.
The recipients are Terrell Campbell, a Malverne School District graduate who will study chemistry at Queens University of Charlotte, Mandy Wagnac, a Westbury School District graduate who will major in neuroscience at Columbia University; and Kierra Jackson, a Hempstead School District graduate who will attend Alfred State College to study health sciences. Each earned their scholarships through their academic achievements, community involvement and by declaring their interest in studying STEM fields in college and pursuing them professionally.
“As a new school year rapidly approaches for Long Island families, we wanted to ensure that students of all ages have the opportunity to excel in the new academic year,” Bynoe said. “Expanding our outreach to these exceptional STEM scholars was a natural outgrowth of our ongoing enrichment efforts through the Road to Success programs, and I am grateful for Dr. Ray Ann Havasy’s partnership in making this new initiative a reality.”
“At the Center for Science Teaching and Learning, we pride ourselves on innovation in our pursuit of making STEM education incredible and available to everyone,” said Dr. Ray Ann Havasy, Director of the Center for Science Teaching and Learning. “It was a pleasure to work with Legislator Bynoe on this project and assist these deserving young scholars with their college education.”
The STEM scholarships were awarded during Bynoe’s fourth annual “Road to Success” school supply giveaway at the Tanglewood Preserve in Lakeview, where key sponsor Bethpage Federal Credit Union’s financial support provided back-to-school essentials for dozens of students. Additional support was provided by the Nassau County Police Department, Lakeview Fire Department, Lakeview branch of the NAACP and St. Paul’s AME Church in Lakeview.
