Prior to Star Boxing’s 32nd edition of the Rockin’ Fights series at The Paramount in Huntington on Sept. 21, students at West Hempstead High School had the opportunity to take part in a Q&A session via WebEx with several professional boxers during an official weigh-in on Sept. 20.
West Hempstead was one of five schools invited to join the session as the boxers answered questions following the Rockin’ Fights official weigh-in from Modell’s Sporting Good in Huntington. The boxers were who took part were Danny Gonzalez, Johnny Hernandez, Anthony Laureano, Alex Vargas and Dashaun Johns.
Each boxer answered 15 minutes of questions during the webinar as the participating students at each school asked questions. The purpose of the interaction was to give students the chance to work with professional athletes as they begin to look into careers in journalism or sports marketing.
Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing Rockin’ Fights series at The Paramount has developed some of Long Island’s biggest stars that include former world champion Chris Algieri, light heavyweight star Joe Smith Jr. and Jr. welterweight knockout artist Cletus “The Hebrew Hammer” Seldin.
DeGuardia — who won numerous titles in boxing, including the coveted NY Golden Gloves Championship in 1988 — has also brought in talent from all over the world to The Paramount such as two-time world champion Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade, from Rhode Island, and former world champion, Joshua Clottey, from Ghana, Africa.

The Rockin’ Fights series is one of the most popular events at this venue, and usually sells out each year. Celebrities such as actor Burt Young and hip-hop artist and actor LL Cool J have attended the event over the years.
