The Lady Rebels, a North Bellmore-North Merrick Little League travel softball team, last month recaptured its crown as New York champion, which the team last held in 2013 and narrowly missed taking last year.
Propelled forward by their years of playing together, the 11- and 12-year-old girls on the team defeated Staten Island’s South Shore squad, 3-1, to win the state tournament on July 18 in upstate Fishkill.

Nassau County Legislator Dave Denenberg, the Merrick Democrat accused by his former employer of overbilling a large corporate client for millions of dollars, was expected to plead guilty to mail fraud charges in federal court in Central Islip on Dec. 11, according to a spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York.
He didn’t, however.

Workers for Hogan Plumbing and Heating, Inc. struck a natural gas pipe last Friday afternoon behind Merrick Shopping Center, according to Don Hogan, the company’s owner. The Merrick Fire Department evacuated more than a dozen houses near the shopping center, and the Nassau County Police Department shut down a block of Merrick Road, but officials quickly determined that there was no danger.

Daisy Denenberg, mother of Nassau County Legislator David Denenberg and two other children, who later in life started a career as a psychologist, earning her doctorate at 51 and working in local schools and then her own practice, died on Nov. 15 after a short battle with cancer. She was 77.

A company’s plans to build “Port Ambrose,” a liquefied natural gas terminal in the Atlantic Ocean 19 miles southeast of Jones Beach, have stalled for months in a federal review process, but that is likely to change next month. A U.S. Coast Guard official estimated that the government will release a Draft Environmental Impact Statement for Port Ambrose in December.
