Craig Levine, a Merrick oral surgeon, leapt as he crossed the finish line of the 10th Annual Robbie’s Run, the Merrick 5K his family’s foundation held on April 26 at Levy-Lakeside Elementary School, to tap an overhanging photo of his late son, Robbie. On Sept. 27, 2005, Robbie died suddenly at the age of 9 when he his heart stopped while he was running the bases of the Lakeside baseball field visible in the background. Craig tried giving CPR to his son, but there was no AED on hand. Craig and his wife, Jill, founded Forever 9: The Robbie Levine Foundation, which since 2006 has organized the annual Robbie’s Run 5K fundraiser, to purchase AEDs for schools and youth ball fields and provide classes in CPR.

They came from Nassau and Suffolk counties, New York City, upstate New York — even Virginia. Most of the hundreds of runners in the 10th Annual Robbie’s Run, however, came from Merrick. more

The ninth annual Robbie’s Run will take place on Sunday, April 27, at Levy-Lakeside Elementary School and on the nearby streets of south Merrick. The event, which includes a 5K run, a one-mile mini-run and a half-mile children’s fun run, is held in memory of 9-year-old Robbie Levine, a Merokean who died of sudden cardiac arrest while running the bases during a Little League baseball practice in 2005. more

Forever 9 signs to stay up at Levy-Lakeside this year

Two signs designating Levy-Lakeside School’s front baseball field as Forever 9 Field, which the Merrick-North Merrick Little League hung in April without permission from the Merrick School District, will remain up for the rest of the year, the Merrick Board of Education decided on June 4. The board also ruled that the Little League can apply in 2014 for permission to keep the signs up. more

Robbie’s Run, which commemorates 9-year-old Robbie Levine of Merrick, who died of heart failure in 2005 while rounding the bases during a Little League practice, attracted more than 1,700 participants between the annual event’s 5K, mile- and half-mile races through Merrick streets and fields on Sunday. As part of the festivities, Joseph Rocco, president of the Merrick-North Little League announced that the league was naming its front baseball field at Levy-Lakeside Elementary School in Merrick as the “Forever 9: Robbie Levine Foundation Field." more
