Merokean Stanley Barkan, center, recently received the Shabdaguchha International Poetry Journal’s Lifetime Achievement Award “for his outstanding contribution to poetry and publishing poets from around the world.” The ceremony took place in August at the International Poetry Festival at Queens Central Public Library in Jamaica.

In 1971, Stanley Barkan’s daughter, Jacqueline Mia, lay in Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan. Two of her four kidneys — yes, she had four — had to be removed because they had become nephritic, or inflamed, which could have led to a deadly infection. She was 2 years old.
