Jane Rubinstein, right, an artist from Merrick — also Ms. New York Senior America 2014 — received an “Achievers Award” from the Long Island Center for Business and Professional Women last month for her charity and community work. Susan Helsinger, founder of the Jason F. Gruen Research Foundation and a fellow Merokean, nominated Rubinstein for the award.

Jane Rubinstein, an artist and retired art teacher from Merrick, was one of a handful of women to take home an “Achievers Award” this year at the Long Island Center for Business and Professional Women’s annual gala. The center recognized Rubinstein for her charity and community work. more

The Merrick Kiwanis Club donated an automated external defibrillator to the North Merrick Public Library. Kiwanis makes heartfelt donations

Martin Valk, a past president of the Merrick Kiwanis Club, noticed that the Merrick and North Merrick libraries did not have automated external defibrillators. Thanks to his and other Kiwanians’ actions, that soon will change. more

Keeping Central DIstrict students heart-healthy

On April 15, 1985, 15-year-old Jason Gruen was walking into Manhasset High School, headed to class, when his heart suddenly stopped and he dropped to the ground, dead. A heart defect had gone undetected. His mother, Susan Gruen Helsinger, who now makes her home in Merrick, was devastated. She still is. more
