The official start of the Atlantic Ocean hurricane season is June 1 — next Tuesday. From now through November, we must be prepared for a storm to come out of nowhere and wreak havoc across Long Island, as Tropical Storm Isaias did last summer.

When Superstorm Sandy rolled across the South Shore on Oct. 29, 2012, it drenched the south Merrick home of Beatrice Brown, now 16, in four and a half feet of saltwater. The storm destroyed her family’s ranch-style house. The Browns lost everything.

On Monday afternoon, the National Hurricane Center upgraded its risk assessment for south Merrick and south Bellmore, saying there was a 10 to 20 percent chance the area could be hit by a storm surge of at least eight feet.
