A year and a half after he was born, Michael Giangregorio’s son, Nicholas, was diagnosed with a developmental disability that, for his father, was at once terrifying, mind-numbing and life-altering. Nicholas, Michael was told, had a severe form of autism. Michael, who is now 48, had a choice, he said, after Nicholas’s diagnosis. He could wallow in despair, or he could accept his son’s condition and not only live with it, but also embrace a new life within the “autism community.” He chose the latter, which has brought its challenges, for sure, but also great satisfaction and joy. more
On Sept. 27, 2005, Jill and Craig Levine faced the unthinkable. Their 9-year-old son Robbie was rounding the bases during a Merrick Little League practice at Levy-Lakeside Elementary School in Merrick when he suddenly collapsed at home plate. He stopped breathing, and had no pulse. Craig, an oral surgeon trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, gave his son CPR for five long, terrifying minutes until a paramedic arrived with a defibrillator and administered electric-shock treatment. When an accident or crime occurs in the Bellmores, John Scalesi can often be found on the scene. Scalesi, 54, a lifelong Bellmore resident and a Mepham High School graduate, has served his home community as a volunteer since he was young. He is active in the Bellmore Fire Department and the Kiwanis and Lions clubs, and he’s an honorary lifetime member of the North Bellmore Fire Department’s Company No. 2. more
