With the sun beating down at mid-morning, a girls’ cross-country team was recently running up and down the half-mile-long hill on the south side of the Town of Hempstead’s Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve in Merrick, sweating profusely and breathing hard in the 90-degree-plus heat. Taking it all in from the side of the seashell-coated path was a red fox –– yes, a red fox –– which stood in the shade, motionless and silent, panting continuously, its eyes half-shut. Repair crews are hurrying to repair the damage that Hurricane Sandy inflicted on the beaches and parkways of Jones Beach Island and Robert Moses State Park, state officials say. A $32.2 million restoration project is scheduled to be finished before Memorial Day, the traditional start of the summer beach season. more
Sept 4: Fears of extensive flooding, power outages and property damage fizzled on Friday as Hurricane Earl passed far enough out to sea that Nassau County suffered little more than scattered beach flooding. Even Jones Beach State Park, where extensive flooding was reported, had some areas open for swimming today and the Stone Temple Pilots concert planned for tonight at the Nikon at Jones Beach Theater will take place as scheduled. more
