A year and a half after he was born, Michael Giangregorio’s son, Nicholas, was diagnosed with a developmental disability that, for his father, was at once terrifying, mind-numbing and life-altering.
Nicholas, Michael was told, had a severe form of autism.
Michael, who is now 48, had a choice, he said, after Nicholas’s diagnosis. He could wallow in despair, or he could accept his son’s condition and not only live with it, but also embrace a new life within the “autism community.” He chose the latter, which has brought its challenges, for sure, but also great satisfaction and joy.

The North Merrick School District is the recent recipient of several grants that will help it pay for new computers and security upgrades in each of its of three schools as well as an exterior beautification project at Fayette. The grants consist of tax revenue that State Sen. Charles Fuschillo Jr. and Norma Gonsalves, presiding officer of the Nassau County Legislature, allocated for the district.

On Dec. 30, one day before one of the biggest drinking nights of the year, State Sen. Charles Fuschillo, Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg and Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice called for swift passage of a new law to close a legal loophole that Fuschillo said allows convicted drunken drivers to escape the mandatory ignition interlock requirement of Leandra’s Law.
