Bellmore author's new book merges math and yoga

Lucia Magnoli, a Merrick native who now lives in Bellmore, raised both hands and explained what parallel lines are to a group of children attending her yoga class at Moonflower Yoga in Bellmore. A few poses later, she bent her knee at 90 degrees and taught the children about right angles. Magnoli’s Aug. 18 class celebrated the launch of her first book “Math + Yoga= No Way!” by including a book signing and combined math and yoga lesson. more

Peter Holms, the owner of the Mobil station at 329 Merrick Ave. in Merrick, posed last week outside his business. Holms is donating a portion of his profits throughout March to Camp Avenue Elementary School in North Merrick.

Businessman raises money for Camp Avenue

This is the third consecutive year in which Peter Holms, proprietor of the Mobil station at 329 Merrick Ave. in Merrick, will donate a cent for every gallon of gasoline he sells in March to Camp Avenue Elementary School. He said that totals about $2,000 each year. more

Alexis Vandergoot, a teacher of chemistry, the living environment, anatomy and marine biology at Kennedy High School, recently passed though the rigorous application process for the state’s “Master Teacher” program. The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District and Merrick School District recently received shipments of multiple-choice tests, sealed in plastic wrap, from NCS Pearson, Inc., the company that creates and grades New York’s standardized tests for third to eighth graders.
