Calhoun and Mepham to host St. Baldrick’s fundraisers

Posted

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation, which raises funds for childhood cancer research, will host two of its signature head-shaving events at Calhoun and Mepham high schools on March 17 and 18, respectively.

St. Baldrick’s is a volunteer nonprofit organization. For its annual fundraisers, participants collect pledges and have their hair cut or shaved in solidarity with children suffering from cancer.

Calhoun's fundraiser will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. The school, at 1786 State St. in Merrick, has raised $425,000 for St. Baldrick's since 2007. For more on the event, check out stbaldricks.org/events/calhounhs or emailing Calhoun teacher Peter Magnuson.

Mepham, at 2401 Camp Ave in North Bellmore, will host its fifth annual St. Baldrick’s fundraiser from 6 to 9 p.m. Students in the Participation in Government classes will run the event, which will honor two local children, Giuliana Geller and Gabrielle Brancaccio.

Additionally, Mepham is holding its own ALS fundraiser, modeled after last summer's ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, which benefited the ALS Association. Mepham is calling its fundraiser the Whip Out Challenge, for which students will have the chance to nominate one another to get platefuls of whip cream splattered on their faces, rather than buckets of ice water poured over their heads.
