Catholic school students honored in contest

Catholic school students from across Nassau County recently gathered at Sacred Heart School in North Merrick to receive awards in the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court Bishop Kellenberg Education Contest. Organizers congratulated winners of the annual competition, which allows students to express their creativity.

The competition is broken into six entry categories: essay, poetry, art, computer art, music and photography. Through their work, students are asked to illustrate themes, which this year were, “Jesus Loves Us: How Do We Spread That Love?” and “How Do I Promote Peace in the World.”

Winners included students from St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Regional School in Bellmore, the St. William the Abbot School in Seaford, Brother Joseph Fox Latin School and St. Martin DePorres Marianist School, both in Uniondale. First-place entries in each category were sent to the state-level contest for judging.

The winners were:

  • Essay category, fourth and fifth grade: John Paul Rincon (first place), Liam Byrne (second place), Christopher Antimisiaris (third place) 
  • Essay category, sixth through eighth grade: Megan Huggard (first place), Andrew Donnelly (second place), Catie Cherpelis (third place) 
  • Poetry category, fourth and fifth grade: Ariana Cserenyi (first place), Pierce Wheeler (second place), Joseph D’Attoma (third place)
  • Poetry, sixth through eighth grade: Haley Gustavson (first place), Otis John Cowhey Reidy (second place), Madison Callinan (third place).
  • Photography category, sixth through eighth grade: Sophie Mazza (first place), Rebecca Acosta (second place), Aidan McBrien (third place).
  • Computer art category, fourth and fifth grade: Ariana Cserenyi (first place), Stephan Loiseau (second place), Donevan Riley (third place).
  • Computer art category, sixth through eighth grade: Noah Nicholson (first place), Camila Ardila (second place), Adrian Rojas (third place).
  • Art category, fourth and fifth grade: Rachel Skennion (first place), Alexandra Danielowich (second place), Josh Suarez (third place).
  • Art category, sixth through eighth grade: Ashley Harding (first place), Juliana Guzzello (second place), Joseph Clines (third place).

The first places winners have now advanced to the statewide competition.
