When Laurie (McCoo) Curtis told me that her newly opened dry cleaner was charging a fixed price of $1.99 per garment, I thought to myself, “What a smart promotion to attract clientele.” But that’s not the case. This is the set price at Pressed Cleaners…for any garment, from a camisole to a coat! And, the story behind its debut is just as unique.

Laurie and her husband, Jeff Curtis, met in business school at University of Virginia. They both became investment bankers and moved to London to work in major financial firms. Six years later, in 2011, they quit their jobs and moved back to Long Island. While they both enjoyed finance, their ultimate dream was to be partners in a business – one of their own.

Laurie’s father, an entrepreneurial type, had been their inspiration. With the help of a friend who owns dry cleaning facilities with the same concept, they modeled and opened Pressed Cleaners. Since it is eco-friendly, this business also followed their passion for a cleaner environment. McCoo, who grew up in Bellmore and Merrick, felt that the area needed a “green” dry cleaner.

Pressed Cleaners uses EcoSolv as their dry cleaning fluid, which is odorless and 100% biodegradable. They do not use Perc, the industry’s long used dry cleaning solvent. Their brand new, state-of-the-art dry Hydrocarbon cleaning machines require one-third the energy of the older industry standard Perc machines. Their new machines use less electricity, water and solvent, which is a major reason Pressed Cleaners can keep its prices so low. Their powerful computer system helps with the business efficiency.

They also launder and press shirts (for an even lower price) and offer same day service. Everything is done on premises. Employed is a team with extensive experience, experts who know fabrics and stains. They also do household items (comforters, etc.) at varied but still reasonable rates.

“We’ve been overwhelmed at how nice people in the community have been.” Pressed Cleaners is located across from the Merrick train station near Game Stop. Hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday.
