Fire tears through Marion Street home in Bellmore

Posted

Twenty-five firefighters from four volunteer departments needed just 15 minutes to extinguish a fierce blaze that tore through a Marion Street home in Bellmore on Monday afternoon.

The call for a working fire came in at 12:39 p.m., according to Bellmore Fire Department spokesman Vincent Scaduto.

Neighbors told fire officials that the elderly couple who live in the home might be trapped inside. Firefighters searched hurriedly inside but found no one. The couple were out at the time.

Thomas Stoerger, Bellmore’s first assistant chief, was first to arrive on the scene. He connected a hose line to a nearby fire hydrant and started a “vigorous” attack on the blaze.

Units from the North Bellmore, Merrick and Wantagh fire departments assisted in putting out the blaze, while units from East Meadow and Seaford stood by at Bellmore fire headquarters.

No other homes were damaged, despite heavy winds, Scaduto said.

“A lot of people commented on the excellent job that everyone did yesterday,” he said. “The operation went really well.”

No injuries were reported. The Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the blaze.
