From garden to table at Park Avenue School

Students at the North Bellmore School District’s Park Avenue School recently received a lesson in garden-to-table cooking.

Youngsters at the school, which is in North Merrick, recently celebrated their fourth annual harvest at the Park Avenue Community Garden by enjoying Stone Soup Day. Robin Obey and Jill Skelly, the garden coordinators, said the first-ever soup-themed celebration brought the community together and taught students valuable lessons.

Stone Soup Day was held on Nov. 6, but the festivities began earlier in the week when Principal Eileen Speidel read the book “Stone Soup” by Marcia Brown on the public address system. Technology was incorporated into the lesson, as each class viewed the book on a Smart Board.

The students harvested potatoes, rutabagas, green beans and onions from the school garden. Parents added corn, squash, spinach, Swiss chard, pasta and chicken broth to the school to create a nutritious meal.
