Celebrate the wonders of nature during Earth Month

Posted

Spring surrounds our senses now and with it, Earth Day arrives on Friday, at the start of the school break week for area families. As Mother Nature displays some of the delights of the season,“Earth Month” culminates with activities that focus on our natural world. It’s a reminder to everyone about the importance of our environment and our role in continuing to preserve and protect it.
There’s much going on throughout the area, to involve all ages in enjoying and nurturing our surroundings.

Planting Fields Arboretum’s Arbor Day Festival
Oyster Bay’s Planting Fields Aboretum celebrates the preservation of trees and their importance to our world at its annual festival, Saturday and Sunday, The more than 4,000 trees in the state park provide a fitting backdrop to the many exhibits and presentations, April 23-24, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. both days.
Since 1987, Planting Fields has commemorated national Arbor Day with a festival of fun-filled educational activities and entertainment. This year’s celebration features tree climbing for the kids, plant clinics, and tree plantings with Smokey Bear (in which everyone can participate), along with free self-guided tours of that grand estate, Coe Hall.
There’s always something for everyone at this family festival: Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary and Audubon Center offers hands-on wildlife programs, concerts with Peat Moss & the Fertilizers and the family band Playdate;, children’s nature crafts, a tree planting ceremony, circus shows with members of the National Circus Project, and more.
While there, try to stop by Coe Hall, and view the new exhibit “Great Ocean Liners 1900-1940.” Inspired by William R. Coe, who lived on the estate and made his career in the marine insurance business, the exhibit features the great vessels of their day, triumphs of engineering that captured the world’s imagination before the age of air and space travel.
