Hempstead shelter to offer free pet adoptions

Posted

The Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter will kick off its annual Summer of Love pet adoption program on Monday. There are lots of cats and dogs that are waiting for a new home.

All pet adoptions are free from June 15 through Sept. 12. Last year, 188 cats and 146 dogs found new homes over the course of the program.

“Residents, please find it in your heart to throw a dog a bone or give a cat a warm, sunny spot to enjoy in the heat of summer,” Supervisor Kate Murray said. “With all adoption fees waived, there is no better time to adopt a pet.”

All adoptions include free rabies vaccinations, spaying or neutering, and microchipping. All cats will be tested for feline AIDS and leukemia.

The town has partnered with a number of pet-friendly businesses, which will provide free services for each pet adopted during Summer of Love program. Dog Grooming by Rachel in Bellmore will provide a coupon for one free grooming for dogs. Island Trees Veterinary Hospital in Hicksville will give coupons for a free exam and $25 towards veterinary services. Fido Fitness Club in Woodmere will provide a coupon for one free training class.

Animal shelter staff will assist any interested pet adopters. Prospective adopters can go online to find all the dogs and cats currently up for adoption at www.toh.li/animal-shelter.

The animal shelter is located at 3320 Beltagh Avenue in Wantagh. For more information, call (516) 785-5220.
