At a June 5 ceremony at the Woodbury Country Club, Herald Community Newspapers took home four honors in the Press Club of Long Island’s annual Media Awards contest.

The Heralds’ six-part Road Less Traveled series, which examined alternative transportation in Nassau County, garnered a second-place award for feature writing. Scott Brinton was the editor and a writer for the series. Other contributors included editor David Weingrad, editor Mary Malloy, reporter Brian Croce, editor Anthony Rifilato and editorial intern Victoria Leistman. The photographers were Penny Frondelli and Justin Plotnick, and the page designer was Alyson Goodman.

For the series, Brinton, Weingrad, Malloy and Croce each wrote first-person accounts of their experiences bicycling, running, walking and kayaking around Nassau County.

Brinton also took first place for profile writing for a two-part story he wrote on longtime South Shore environmental and civic activist Morris Kramer of Atlantic Beach. Andrew Smith and Jim Baumbach of Newsday took second and third in the category, respectively.

The Merrick Herald received third place for “Best Community Weekly Newspaper,” behind the Riverhead News Review and the Southampton Press. Brinton was the editor; Weingrad, the reporter; Christina Daly, the photo editor; and Kristen Edelman, the page designer.

And Herald photographer Kathy Leistner earned a third place for sports photography for a shot of Oceanside High School quarterback Tom Capone celebrating a thrilling, last-minute victory.
