Accident prevention not their goal

To the Editor:
I read with interest last week’s letter to the editor regarding refunding school zone ticket fees (“County should refund ‘ill-gotten gains.’”)
I received four tickets at $80 each. At no time have I ever seen even one student outside of any of the schools involved in the fines. I agree that safety studies were not done to justify the implementation of this program.
Many years ago I requested a stop sign at my corner since it was the route my son took to walk to school. A safety study was done and it was determined that there hadn’t been accidents at that spot in the last three years, so my request was denied. If the school zone speed program was truly developed to decrease accidents in school zones, where are the studies to show that there have been accidents in these areas? Why are the fines so high?  Eighty dollars is a lot of money.
The day the county suspended the program one of my tickets was due.  I did not pay it until a few weeks later and got hit with a $25 fine. I am lucky enough to have a job and have income.  How about the many Long Islanders who are out of work?  How are they supposed to pay these fines?
I understand that even one accident is too many and I certainly am all for children’s safety, but I don’t believe that accident prevention was the goal of this program. Like so many others, I think it was developed to generate funds. I have plenty of other bills I could have paid with the $345 the County took from me.
