MAMS student is tops in fencing

Posted

It is not often that a student-athlete who wins a national championship in her sport has the time for another extracurricular activity. For well-rounded Merokean Joy Ma, however, the national title is just the beginning.

Ma, a Merrick Avenue Middle School eighth-grader, claimed first place in the 14-year-old Women’s Eppe division of the 2014 March North American Cup, a fencing competition that took place last month in Memphis. She finished in sixth place in Division 3 Women’s Eppe, which is for women who are 14 and older. These achievements followed three years of weekly fencing practice.

Ma is also a member of MAMS’ cheerleading squad and jazz band. A singer, pianist and flutist, Ma performs for her school and also in concerts that she and friends prepare and arrange at local nursing homes. She has earned a bronze medal for scoring highly on an American Mathematics Competition test and had her artwork featured in the Art Supervisors Association’s Nassau All-County Art Exhibition at Adelphi University.
