A Merrick man has filed a complaint with Internal Affairs at the Nassau County Police Department, alleging he was beaten by an officer last weekend while trying to see his dying mother in the hospital.

According to an Associated Press report, Gary Leifer followed an ambulance transporting his 84-year-old mother to the Nassau University Medical Center on Saturday morning, and after parking, was told by an officer to move his car.

Leifer alleges that he was body-slammed and held to the ground by the officer for 20 minutes while he repeatedly asked to go see his mother, who died soon after.

A spokeswoman for the Nassau County Police said on Wednesday that the investigation into Leifer’s complaint is open.
