Two killed in Newbridge Road crash

A crash near the intersection of two Bellmore roads left two dead and one hospitalized on Tuesday, Nassau County Police said.

Authorities said they responded to a call about the accident, which occurred near Newbridge Road and Camp Avenue, at 11:14 a.m. on Nov. 20. The two passengers in the front seat of a 2002 Hyundai, heading east on Camp Avenue, were killed in a collision with 1998 Mack “front loading” refuse truck. Police said a third passenger, a female found in the back of the car, was in critical condition on Tuesday afternoon but has been stabilized.

The truck registered to Jamaica Ash collided with the car while heading north, police said. As a result of the collision, Hempstead resident Telvina Zavala, 28, suffered fatal injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene, police said Wednesday.

The male driver, North Bellmore’s Cipriano Perez, 47, and the rear seat female passenger were moved to a local hospital. Police said Perez, 47, was pronounced dead by a staff physician shortly after his arrival. The rear seat passenger, a 31-year-old from Westbury, was admitted with non-life threatening injuries and is listed in stable condition.

The driver of the refuse truck suffered minor arm pain and refused medical attention at the scene, police said.

Officials said both vehicles were impounded from the scene for brake and safety inspections and no criminality was involved in the accident. Newbridge Road was closed north and south of Camp Avenue after the incident, and Camp was also closed east and west of Newbridge.
