The setting sun drew shadows of the service men and women from the Bellmore and North Bellmore fire departments, who stood in two rows before the Bellmore Fire Department’s 9/11 Memorial last Wednesday night.
Dozens of community members gathered for the department’s annual wreath- laying ceremony to commemorate those lost in the Sept. 11 terror attacks 18 years ago.
The departments honored Bellmore volunteer and New York City firefighters Kevin Prior and Adam Rand, who died in the line of duty trying to help victims trapped in the towers. Relatives of the fallen placed flowers at the base of the memorial in remembrance of their loves ones. Prior was 28 when he died; Rand was 30.
The community also remembered Sean Michael McCarthy, who responded to the World Trade Center in 2001, and died from 9/11-related cancer in 2008. He was 36.
