Merokean still fundraising to fight AIDS

Merrick native Francine Goldstein has been an active participant of AIDS Walk New York for the past 28 years, raising thousands of dollars to fight the virus that took a dear friend. Goldstein will participate at this year’s walk on May 21 and hopes to break $41,000, which she raised last year.

In 2016 Goldstein was recognized by the Nassau County Legislature and received the Humanitarian of the Year award for raising a cumulative $505,000 for AIDS Walk New York.

“The first year we did the walk, her sponsors consisted of me and our two dogs,” recalled Goldstein’s husband, Lenny, in a November interview. “Now she has over 500 sponsors.”

AIDS Walk New York has raised roughly $1.5 million since its inception. All funds go toward multiple local HIV/AIDS advocacy programs and service organizations such as the Gay Men’s Health Crisis.
