In the race for New York Assembly District 17, John Mikulin, a Republican from Levittown, took a big lead over Matthew Malin, a Democrat from Seaford.

With 109 precincts counted, Mikulin had 2,143 votes, or 63 percent, and Malin had 1,215 votes, or 34 percent.

McKevitt, a Republican, held the seat for 12 years before leaving to represent District 13 in the Nassau County Legislature. During the race, he endorsed Mikulin and said, “I have known him personally for 12 years . . . I think he is very bright, energetic, has a good hands-on knowledge of the needs of the district.”

McKevitt added that he supports MiKulin’s desire to “preserve suburbia” by incentivizing businesses to come to Long Island and creating more employment opportunities.

Mikulin is the president of the board of trustees for the Island Trees Public Library and a member of the Delaney Council 5983 Knights of Columbus, Nassau County Bar Association and Levittown Property Owners Association. He currently works as a Deputy Town of Hempstead attorney.

The district includes East Meadow, Seaford, Wantagh, Bethpage, Farmingdale, Levittown, Massapequa and Uniondale.
