The sun, and crowds, come out for parade

Horns were blowing, flutes were chiming and feet were pattering on Monday during Merrick’s Memorial Day parade. Hundreds of marchers and sideline attendees filled the community’s streets.

Sunny summer weather graced the parade-goers, who all lined up bright and early. Merrick’s American Legion Post 1282 began the march, led by Commander Jim O’Neill. Dozens of Merrick’s well-known organizations united for the event. Several girl and cub scout troops held their banners with pride. Merrick’s fire departments joined the charge, passing in their bright red trucks. North Merrick School District’s marching band provided some tunes.

The parade kicked-off from the corner of Broadcast Plaza and Merrick Avenue. There, the statue honoring local veterans stands tall.
