Baldwin Life Stitches, a group of caring
crafters, recently donated 60 blankets to patients at the South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside. The group, which founder Aimee Pontrelli described as “a community-based … organization dedicated to the advancement of primary education and charity in Baldwin,” hand-stitched 35 baby blankets and 25 prayer shawls and delivered them to representatives from SNCH.

Army Sgt. 1st Class Kevin Lipari, 39, of Baldwin, died on Dec. 14 while serving in the Logar province of Afghanistan, the Department of Defense said last week. Lipari was assigned to the HHC 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, a part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Hidden away in room 111 at the Baldwin Senior High School is a café that’s brewing up much more than coffee. The location isn’t great — Cup-o-Joe is wedged between a bathroom and an elevator — and the baristas can’t whip you up a low-fat, half-caff latte with extra foam and cinnamon. But that’s not really what this establishment is all about. It is, rather, a place where special education students in BHS’s Life Skills program can gain real-world work experience in a safe and familiar space.

Nunley’s Carousel, a Nassau County landmark that stood in Baldwin from 1940 until 1995, hit the century mark this year, and a special celebration is planned for this weekend at the Carousel Pavilion, next to the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City.
