On Monday, September 26th, the Rockville Links Country Club hosted the 29th Annual Community Fund and Mayor’s Golf Classic. For its anniversary, the Classic honored the RVC Little League.

The Rockville Centre Little League was established in 1951 by William E.

Seward, Thomas Nofi and the League’s first President, Edward J. Bligh. In 1999 a Softball Program was added, by then- President Tom Gallucci, Eric Olsen and Rita Nofi Etienne. The Challenger Division for children premiered in 2012, and just this past season the introduction of a new 6-year old Sluggers Division for boys, to match their 6-year old Munchkin Division for girls was made. Since 2003, many players and other RVC children have held their first job in RVCLL’s Youth Umpire program. While the group is deeply rooted in the Little League International virtues of “Courage, Character and Loyalty,” RVCLL boys and girls have enjoyed their share of success on the field. Over the past 66 years, they have won 94 District Championships, 21 Nassau County Championships, 16 Long Island Championships and 4 New York State Championships.

“It was my great pleasure and privilege to honor such an integral part of our community,” commented Mayor Francis X. Murray. “Their time and commitment to the our youth does not go unnoticed.”

The League has become increasingly community minded. Over the past six years their Opening Day Parade & Food Drive has generated 14,000 pounds of non-perishable food for neighbors in need, right in Rockville Centre. Each year, 1,200 children register to play baseball and softball with RVCLL. It takes the efforts of its 200 volunteer coaches and its 26-person Board of Directors, to carry out a 12-month-a-year labor of love

The Classic, and accompanying dinner, is the primary fundraiser for the Rockville Centre Community Fund. The Fund, dedicated exclusively to helping members of the Rockville Centre community, has raised more than $1.6 million in emergency assistance since 1987. Tickets and sponsorships for the all-day event, as well as journal ads are still available.

The 2016 Eugene Murray Outstanding Citizenship Award was presented to Jeff Greenfield. “Like my father, Jeff has paved the way towards making Rockville Centre a safer community through his vision, generosity, and dedication,” continued Mayor Murray.
