Approve Oceanside school budget

Posted

On Tuesday, residents will vote on the $147.2 million Oceanside school district budget for 2016-17, a $2.8 million increase, or 1.97 percent, over the current spending plan.

The tax levy for next year is $117.5 million, an increase of about .43 percent, or $500,000. The budget includes a new boys’ swim team, more teachers and special education aides.

We encourage voters to say “yes” to the budget.

Re-elect Transom and D’Ambrosio

Board of Education President Robert Transom and Trustee Michael D’Ambrosio are running unopposed for re-election. (As the Herald went to press on Monday, no one else had declared a candidacy. The deadline to file a petition is Tuesday at 5 p.m.)

D’Ambrosio finishing his first term, while Transom has been on the board since 1998. We urge the re-election of both men.

Say ‘yes’ to Oceanside Library budget

Voters should approve the $4.65 million budget for the Oceanside Public Library. Taxpayers will pay a total of $30,714 more — an increase of just .7 percent. For the average household this increase would amount to about $5 a year.

Local voters must make it clear on Tuesday that their library is vital part of the community, and they want to see it thrive.
