Bringing Jolson and his music to life

Posted

He was known as the world’s greatest entertainer, and although he died in 1950 the International Al Jolson Society international keeps his memory, music, films, and show alive.

Al Jolson was born Asa Yoelson in 1886 in a small Lithuanian village, and after his family immigrated to the U.S. his father became a cantor at a synagogue in Washington, D.C. The religious life was not for young Asa. He loved to sing modern songs, and did so any chance he got. In time that love of music made him the biggest singing star of stage, screen and movies.

Jan Hernstat is president of the society and every year he produces a festival for Jolson fans from all over the world. On August 15, the Oceanside Knights of Columbus hall reverberated with many old favorites, as singer Tony Babino brought Jolson’s songs alive with his award-winning show, “The Heart of Al Jolson,” featuring David Gross on the piano. Brian Gari, grandson of Jolson’s friend and showbiz contemporary Eddie Cantor, was also there along with Ms. Senior New York, Donna Dean and Hara Benjamin Garritano.

This year featured a special presentation of a never before seen color video of Jolson entertaining American troops overseas during the Korean war.
