Costco eyes Oil City property

Costco Wholesale has requested permission to build a shopping club on a parcel of land at 3642 Hampton Rd. in Oceanside. The property sits on the edge of Oil City, at the southeast corner of Hampton Road and Daly Boulevard.

“The parcel is zoned for industrial use,” said Richard Regina, secretary to the Town of Hempstead Zoning Board of Appeals. “The only reason that Costco has to come to the zoning board is that they’re not providing enough parking according to the Town of Hempstead building zone ordinance.”

Under town code, Costco must provide 793 spaces on that spot, but representatives have told the board of appeals that it can only provide 616. A public hearing, in which Costco sought to obtain a variance, was completed on Jan. 29. One neighbor of the property, who was represented by an attorney, has 30 days to file a written objection with the zoning board, after which Costco’s attorney would have an additional two weeks to reply.

“For now, we’re waiting to hear from the neighbor’s attorney,” Regina said.
