Emergency at Masone Beach

The Island Park Fire Department was called the scene of a 16-year-old girl having a seizure at Masone Beach on July 14. The call came in at 2:26 p.m.

“When we got there we realize the patient was on the 50 yard floating dock out in the water,” said First Assistant Fire Chief James Miotto who was in command. He said the Department’s Water Rescue Team was called. One member who is also an Emergency Medical Technician treated the victim on the dock.

Miotto said a mutual aid call went out for water rescue teams to Atlantic Beach and Oceanside. Long Beach aided with a patient sled and the Nassau County Marine Bureau also responded.

A friend held the victim so she did not go into the water, and the Village’s lifeguards assisted, Miotto added.

“When more personnel arrived a couple of swimmers were sent out, they packed her on a body board and swam her back to shore,” Miotto said, “She was dazed and confused, which is expected after a seizure. Thank God it happened on the dock and not in the water.”

The victim was taken by ambulance to South Nassau Communities Hospital.

The Water Rescue Team trains weekly, Miotto said. They will take this situation and recreate it, as they do others. They also train with Atlantic Beach Rescue and the Fire Training Academy.

Miotto said Island Park does not go to the ocean, but if it happens in the bay they could get called to respond.
