Local officials and New York City police officers attended a fundraiser held Feb. 7 in Long Beach for officer Kenneth Healey of Oceanside. Healey had just graduated from the Police Academy last July. He was attacked Oct. 24, in Jamaica, Queens, when Zale Thompson, 32, came after 4 officers who were posing for a photographer. Thompson, who lived in Queens Village, plunged the silver hatchet into the side of Healey’s head, and sliced the right arm of Officer Joseph Meeker, 24. The attacker was later shot and killed. Healey had been hospitalized and spent time in rehabilitation until his release in November.
