Obituary: Daniel Galgano, 95

Former Oceanside Fire Commissioner Daniel Galgano died on Nov. 9. He was 95.

Galgano was born on Dec. 18, 1919 to Luigi and Rosina Galgano, Italian immigrants who settled in New York City. He lived a life of public service starting with the Civilian Conservation Corps, the United States Army during World War II, and 65 years as a volunteer firefighter and Fire Commissioner in Oceanside. It was in WWII that he met his wife of 71 years, Florence Jordan. They had seven children.

They moved out of New York City to Oceanside where he worked in the Oceanside School District. He began shoveling coal as a custodian in an elementary school and worked his way to the Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds in Huntington.

Galgano served as an Oceanside Fire Commissioner for two terms, the President of the New York State Superintendent of Building and Grounds Association, and the President of the Boulevard Club Condo Association. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and American Legion.

He retired to Florida, where he lived in Seminole and Fort Myers.

Galgano is survived by his daughter Rosemary Galgano of Colonial Heights, Va., his son Louis Galgano of Seminole, Fla., and his daughter, retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Teresa Galgano of Fort Myers, Fla. He wass predeceased by his daughter, Beatrice Galgano Gale, and his sons, Kit James Galgano, Daniel Michael Galgano and Anthony Galgano.
