Veterans, Gold Star parents may receive exemptions

The Board of Education will conduct two separate public hearings on March 11 at 7:30 p.m. The hearings will be conducted within the already scheduled Board of Education meeting and budget workshop in the School 6 cafeteria.

The hearings are intended to give all interested parties and citizens an opportunity to be heard on proposed resolutions to authorize partial exemptions of school taxes based on military service.

The first hearing concerns a proposed resolution authorizing a partial exemption of school taxes for veterans of defined periods of war, veterans who received expeditionary medals, certain members of their families and certain civilians, as provided for in New York State’s Real Property Tax Law. The second hearing concerns a proposed resolution that authorizes a partial exemption of school taxes for eligible Gold Star parents as provided for in that same law.

Following the hearings, the Board of Education will vote on both of these resolutions during the portion of the Board of Education meeting that is typically reserved for such votes.
