On Sept. 14 the National Merit Corporation announced their National Merit Scholarship semifinalists for 2016. Among the semifinalists was Oceanside High School’s very own Andrew Carlins.

The National Merit scholarship is a highly selective award, and every year 16,000 students are picked nationwide to be semifinalists. In Feb. the finalists are chosen according to the students’ academic performance.

“I’m super proud,” said Andrew’s mother, Tammy Carlins. “And I just wish Andrew continued success and it is well deserved.” Looking to college with an eye towards international issues, Andrew is interested in pursuing majors in economics, political science, international relations and business. While he is currently shopping around for colleges his ultimate goal is to better understand the world in a way where he can help make it a better place.

“I call my son my Sonshine,” said his mother. “I wish him the best of luck and look forward to making this journey with him.”
