Stepping Out

Signs of the season

Welcoming spring around the area

At long last we may be able to bid farewell to the winter of our discontent (to borrow a phrase from the Bard). Snow and ice are no longer a topic of daily conversation and we can begin to enjoy the outdoors once again.
It’s definitely time to venture outside. Here are some ideas to welcome the season – and Earth month – at some of the area’s favorite spots to savor some sun and the first signs of spring.

Old Westbury Gardens
Spring is finally in the air at Old Westbury Gardens, which welcomes visitors this weekend for a first glimpse of early season blooms. The acclaimed Gardens embarks on another year with an-always busy schedule of programs and activities, ready to delight everyone with the glorious gardens and related events.
The first signs of the season are beginning to appear. “Following a winter that seemed as though it would never end, and an early spring that took quite a while to spring into action, it appears that the warmer weather is finally, thankfully, here to stay,” says said Old Westbury Gardens’ spokesman Vincent Kish.
“We are all looking for a cure to the cabin fever with which we have suffered for too long, and the perfect prescription is a visit to Old Westbury Gardens. The time has come, and then some, after this unusually harsh and long winter to stretch those legs with a long, healthy walk on our 200 acres of wooded trails and wide open spaces.”
Kish encourages visitors not wait until summer to explore the Gardens, noting that the April to early June period has much to offer. “It’s especially beautiful in mid to late spring when there are so many things blooming,” he says.
“Visiting the Gardens in April is a special experience,” says Kish. “While the weather is still a little brisk, it’s invigorating take walks on our many trails. You’ll soon be able to see the wildflowers and tulips are getting ready to open.”
