Welcome to your local newspaper

Our Neighbors page highlights special local events. It’s also where you’ll see stories about interesting residents and prominent community figures.

Each week you’ll also find the Crime Watch. It helps you keep tabs on law enforcement activity in the community.

Our Sports page features local student athletes and chronicles the wins and losses of our teams. Our award-winning team of sportswriters focuses on high school sports throughout the school year, bringing you the best coverage so you can follow the local teams all season.

When school is in session, we have a Schools page every week, highlighting the events in our high-achieving schools. This is where you should look to find out what’s new in your child’s education and see what’s going on in the schools.

There’s also Community Update, which keeps residents in the know about upcoming events at the libraries in Oceanside and Island Park and Oceanside’s Department of Community Activities, as well as special events around the area. And if you’re looking for fun things to do outside those communities, you’ll want to go to our weekly Stepping Out section, which features events all over Long Island.

We also publish obituaries. They are often the last record of a person’s life, and we are honored to be the record keepers. If one of your loved ones has died and you want his or her story published in the Herald, please let us know.

The Herald is an award-winning paper. We are here to chronicle your community and to keep you informed about what’s going on next door and across town. Whether it takes place in a school auditorium, in Village Hall or in the middle of a street, we cover it.

And we love getting feedback from readers in the form of Letters to the Editor. Even if they’re not glowing compliments (although we always hope they are), we publish the letters our readers send us.

You can reach either the Oceanside/Island Park Editor, Howard Schwach, or the paper’s reporter, John Maher, any time by emailing hschwach@liherald.com or jmaher@liherald.com, or by calling (516) 569-4000 ext. 269 for Schwach or ext. 282 for Maher. You can also mail anything to 2 Endo Blvd., Garden City, N.Y. 11530.
