Devlin is right choice for East Rockaway school board

Posted

Both East Rockaway Board of Education candidates are heavily involved in the community and have innovative ideas. In a close call, however, we endorse Theresa Devlin over Dom Vulpis. As a parent of students in the district, she is directly affected by the decisions of the board and is better equipped to speak on the viewpoints of parents and students alike.

Devlin has a son enrolled at East Rockaway Junior-Senior High School and two other children at Rhame Avenue School. Vulpis, meanwhile, has three children, all of whom graduated from the high school.

On the current board, only one of the four members has school-age children, so the board could use a current district parent.

Devlin regularly attends public meetings and appears to have the community’s pulse. She has been a member of the high school and Rhame Avenue PTAs, and served on the Budget Advisory Committee and as one of the directors of the East Rockaway Education Foundation. She has vowed to be a vocal board member who would advocate for other parents and also listen to differing opinions with an open mind. Voters should give her that chance.

Vulpis has been a pillar of the community and served for two decades as a district athletic director, giving him a vast knowledge of its operations. He offered strong ideas, but we thought Devlin was the stronger candidate.
