Oceanside district to host several 9/11 events

The Oceanside School District will hold several events on the weekend of the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. A ceremony commemorating the events of that day will take place and will begin with a walk from Oceanside High School to Schoolhouse Green on Foxhurst Avenue. The walk will step off at 5 p.m., and the ceremony will take place at 6 p.m.
Walk participants will be invited to carry paper flowers made by Oceanside students to represent the people lost and to honor their memories. District members will have the opportunity to purchase Oceanside Remembers T-Shirts in remembrance of the events of 9/11 on, and all proceeds from T-shirt sales will be donated to a 9/11-related charity. Mt. Sinai South Nassau hospital will have its Covid-19 “Vaxmobile” present at the high school to administer free Covid vaccines on 9/11. There will also be a blood drive at Oceanside High School from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
A varsity soccer game against Baldwin will be played at 3 p.m. at Oceanside High on Sept. 11. Prior to the start of the game, the district will read out the names of community members who lost their lives in the 9/11 attacks. The Oceanside Fire Department will also hold CPR demonstrations and other activities to teach children about first responders.
High School students will reflect by signing a “Never Forget” banner at the high school that will be donated to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum. Elementary school students will sign a banner with a message of “thank you” to the first responders. This will be donated to the Oceanside Fire Department at the Schoolhouse Green ceremony.
