Nassau County police reported that two off-duty NYPD officers notified them of a man allegedly trespassing early Wednesday afternoon at an Oceanside home, setting off a violent series of events that would lead to his eventual arrest.

According to the report, the off-duty officers called 911 after seeing Nicholas Ulip, 24, of Oceanside climbing the fence of an Anchor Avenue home at around 1 p.m., but while the two waited for police to arrive Ulip, with a knife on his hip, reportedly pushed passed the two, entered a car occupied by a woman and a child and sped away hitting and injuring the pair. They were taken to a nearby hospital, but the extent of their injuries is unknown.

Residents reported seeing helicopters overhead as a police investigation of the incident led to Ulip’s arrest at his Harvey Avenue home later in the day. The Herald also received multiple unconfirmed reports from neighbors that Ulip had barricaded himself inside his house before surrendering to police. School officials said that county police did not recommend nearby School No. 3 be placed on lockout.

Ulip was charged with six counts of second-degree assault, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, first-degree criminal trespassing, leaving the scene of an accident and endangering the welfare of a child. He was arraigned on Thursday at the First District Court in Hempstead.
