Oppenheimer: This has been an ongoing issue for many years. I believe that if the village offered more activities for the youth in conjunction with RVCBL, the Lacrosse Club, Little League, the Soccer Club, Scouts, Youth Council, etc. there would be more good alternatives for the community youth to take advantage of. There is also a Junior Firefighters program and Police Explorers program that are currently available for our youth’s participation. As a trustee, it would be appropriate to support, fund and expand these worthwhile programs to keep our kids occupied in safe activities.

Glynn: The problem is not teenagers walking the streets per se, but rather any unlawful or disorderly behavior. To address the issue, the Village Board must look at a two-prong policy that will help deter any unlawful or disorderly behavior and to also assist our police department in providing as immediate a response as possible. At the direction of the Village Board, our police department has been implementing a Neighborhood Watch program to provide additional eyes and ears for our police department that will aid in heading off any disorderly conduct. As a deterrent against future bad acts, I encourage the transfer of youthful offense community service from the purview of the Recreation Department to the Sanitation Department, where the offenders can assist the village in sweeping out refuse from the sanitation transfer station. That would be a necessarily humbling experience for any youthful offenders and deter against future offenses.
